The role includes designing and executing high‑voltage substations (34.5 kV–500 kV) with emphasis on safety, cost, quality and reliability; generating detailed engineering deliverables; producing general arrangement, elevation, grounding and conduit drawings; performing calculations; following supervisor instructions; using CAD tools; establishing manufacturing, construction and installation standards; inspecting installations; overseeing project production to ensure timely, on‑budget completion; preparing and reviewing technical drawings and specifications; and traveling to job sites for assessment and data gathering. • Design and execute high‑voltage substation projects (34.5 kV–500 kV) focusing on safety, cost, quality and reliability. • Produce detailed engineering deliverables, including general arrangement, elevation, grounding, and conduit drawings. • Perform engineering calculations and establish manufacturing, construction, and installation standards. • Use CAD tools (AutoCAD or MicroStation) to create and review design drawings. • Inspect installations and ensure compliance with design specifications and safety standards. • Oversee project production to meet schedule and budget requirements. • Travel to job sites for assessments, gather field data, and incorporate findings into designs. • Apply relevant codes and standards (NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, Design Guide for Rural Substations). • Review and coordinate vendor submittals for design compliance. • Develop complete construction documents with minimal supervision.

What You Bring

GFT is searching for a Physical Substation Designer to work remote. An experienced Physical Designer could also work remotely anywhere in the United States (fully remote). The ideal candidate has 3+ years of substation or electrical T&D design experience, expertise with AutoCAD or MicroStation, thorough knowledge of NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI and the Design Guide for Rural Substations, ability to review vendor submittals, understand phase spacing and clearance requirements, develop complete construction documents with minimal supervision, create control enclosure, cable tray and conduit layouts, knowledge of MV/HV/EHV voltages, design duct banks, interpret engineering calculations, manage schedules and budgets, understand substation structures and equipment, know construction and commissioning practices, write routine reports, and sketch design documents independently. Preferred qualifications include experience in the energy industry or consulting services and skills in 3D modeling. • Minimum 3 years of substation or electrical T&D design experience. • Proficiency in AutoCAD or MicroStation. • Strong knowledge of NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, and rural substation design guides. • Ability to create and review layouts, elevations, grounding plans, single‑line diagrams, and conduit plans independently. • Understanding of substation voltages (MV, HV, EHV), phase spacing, and clearance requirements. • Experience with substation structures, equipment, and commissioning techniques. • Skilled in performing engineering calculations and interpreting study results. • Ability to manage schedules, meet budgets, and produce routine reports.

Benefits
