About the Role

The Leadman provides leadership, instruction, and guidance to craft workers in the work crew, assisting the Foreman while functioning as a journeyman. This role ensures coordinated efforts among team members and maintains high standards of workmanship. The Leadman assembles, inspects for defects, and repairs boilers, tanks, vats, pressure vessels, and related auxiliaries according to blueprints and specifications, using both power and hand tools. Work includes positioning, aligning, welding, and testing components to ensure proper operation. • Locate and mark reference points on foundations using geometry tools. • Attach rigging and signal crane operators to lift components. • Align structures or plates for boiler, tank, or vat assembly using plumb bobs, levels, and turnbuckles. • Hammer, flame‑cut, file, and grind irregular edges for proper fitting. • Position and secure drums and headers to supports. • Align water tubes and expand ends to drums and headers with a tube expander. • Perform minor maintenance and cleaning with tools and equipment. • Install manholes, handholds, valves, gauges, and feed‑water connections in drums. • Signal crane operator for precise part placement. • Test assembled vessels by pressurizing with water or gas and monitoring for leaks. • Repair boilers or tanks in the field by unbolting, flame‑cutting, straightening, installing new tubes, and welding. • Fasten and caulk vessel sections using pneumatic tools. • Line fireboxes with refractory brick and blocks. • Fabricate parts such as stacks, uptakes, and chutes to fit installation sites. • Apply flame‑cutting and torch techniques safely. • Observe and comply with all safety and project rules. • Apply shop mathematics to solve problems. • Plan work and select appropriate tools. • Detect size, shape, and form differences in drawings and objects. • Visualize three‑dimensional objects from plans. • Make decisions based on measurable criteria.

What You Bring

The position typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent combined with several years of relevant experience. Candidates must possess knowledge of industry concepts, practices, and procedures, and rely on established instructions while working under immediate supervision. Independent judgment is limited, and reporting is generally to a supervisor or manager. The job demands frequent standing, walking, and occasional sitting, with the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull loads up to 50 lb and exert forces of 70 ft‑lb. Workers must be comfortable working at heights, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, and using fingers frequently. • Bolt or arc‑weld structural sections together. • Bolt or weld casing sections, uptakes, stacks, baffles, and fabricated parts (e.g., chutes, air heaters, ladders) to the frame.
