Job Highlights
About the Role
The role involves developing, building, modifying, debugging, and repairing complex dies, jigs, tools, fixtures, gauges, special machinery, and mechanisms. These duties are performed in a tool room environment. Daily responsibilities include interpreting blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions to determine required materials and machines, computing dimensions and planning layouts, and measuring, marking, and scribing metal stock for machining. The technician sets up and operates machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and surface grinders, then verifies that machined parts conform to specifications. Additional tasks involve lifting and positioning parts, securing them on surface plates or work tables, performing surface and profile grinding to achieve proper fits, and verifying dimensions, alignments, and clearances. Heat treating of tools or parts, complex setups for irregularly shaped dies, and examination of existing dies to recommend design modifications are also required. The role includes developing specifications from general descriptions, creating design sketches, and planning, instructing, and assisting other tool‑room personnel. • Interpret blueprints, sketches, models, and descriptions to determine materials and machining processes. • Compute dimensions, plan layouts, and define assembly sequences. • Measure, mark, and scribe metal stock for machining. • Set up and operate lathes, milling machines, and surface grinders. • Verify machined parts against specifications. • Lift, position, and secure parts on work tables or surface plates. • Perform surface and profile grinding to achieve required fits. • Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances of assembled components. • Heat‑treat tools and parts as needed. • Execute complex setups for irregularly shaped dies and tools. • Examine existing dies, tools, and jigs and recommend design improvements. • Develop specifications and create design sketches for specialty tools. • Instruct and assist other tool‑room personnel. • Apply knowledge of tool steels in tool fabrication. • Use precision measuring instruments for quality control.
