About the Role
The Indirect Tax Manager will oversee sales, use, and property tax compliance, support audit matters, and serve as a strategic partner during estimating, contracting, and invoicing processes. The role can be fully remote or hybrid, with regular in‑office presence required in San Diego, CA or Edison, NJ. Core responsibilities include ensuring accurate tax filing, advising project and procurement teams on contract tax implications, conducting technical tax research, managing audits, improving tax determination and accrual processes within ERP systems, and training stakeholders. The manager will also develop internal tax policies and support the implementation of tax engine solutions to enhance automation and risk mitigation. • Prepare, review, and file sales, use, withholding, and property tax returns timely. • Ensure proper tax treatment for construction contracts, including long‑term and change‑order billing. • Monitor indirect tax compliance across multiple jurisdictions, sites, and project entities. • Maintain accurate indirect tax accounting and perform reconciliations. • Advise project, procurement, and commercial teams on tax implications of contracts and subcontracting. • Review contract language for correct sales‑tax treatment and protect tax responsibilities. • Validate sales‑tax calculation and collection using tools such as Avalara. • Analyze taxability of project estimates and contracts at state and local levels. • Conduct tax technical research, document findings, and communicate positions to stakeholders. • Develop internal tax policy documents and support risk mitigation. • Manage indirect tax audits and inquiries from tax authorities. • Identify and mitigate tax risks, implementing internal controls for consistent treatment. • Improve tax determination and accrual processes within ERP and procurement systems. • Maintain exemption certificate management and support tax engine implementations (e.g., Vertex, Avalara). • Build automation and digital tools to streamline tax processes. • Train finance, procurement, and project teams on indirect tax compliance. • Collaborate with finance, legal, and operations for timely stakeholder communication.

What You Bring
Candidates must hold a B.S. in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or Law (advanced credentials such as an MS, JD, or CPA preferred) and possess at least ten years of indirect tax experience, preferably within construction, engineering, or renewable energy. Strong analytical, critical‑thinking, and communication skills, ERP familiarity, and the ability to translate complex contract language into correct tax treatment are essential. • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or Law; MS, JD, or CPA preferred. • 10+ years of indirect tax experience, preferably in construction, engineering, or renewables. • Deep knowledge of construction‑specific tax issues such as mixed supplies and cost‑plus contracts. • Proven experience handling indirect tax audits and working with tax authorities. • Proficiency with ERP systems and tax determination tools. • Strong analytical, critical‑thinking, and problem‑solving abilities. • Ability to interpret complex construction contracts and translate them into correct tax treatment. • Excellent written and verbal communication with internal and external stakeholders. • Detail‑oriented, able to manage multiple competing priorities. • Proactive, self‑motivated, able to work independently and within a team. • Strategic, commercial mindset focused on risk management and value creation. • Adaptable to changing priorities and able to explain technical concepts to non‑tax teams.
