About the Role

Key duties include safely operating the assigned vehicle, conducting on‑the‑job training, and observing driver performance to deliver immediate feedback. The DDT records progress, reports performance data to management, and mentors drivers to build confidence and competence. Additionally, the DDT acts as an ambassador for WM, promoting the company’s safety culture and values. • Operate assigned WM vehicle safely and efficiently, complying with WM Safety, OSHA, DOT, and all legal regulations; perform pre‑ and post‑trip inspections and waste/recycling collection. • Provide on‑the‑job training and coaching on vehicle operation, defensive driving, and safety practices for new drivers and those reassigned or with performance issues. • Observe driver performance, give immediate constructive feedback, and reinforce WM safety, defensive driving, WM Way processes, and OBU tablet usage. • Maintain accurate records of driver progress, strengths, improvement areas, and completed training tasks; recommend further coaching as needed. • Report driver performance data to the Route Manager and Onboarding Optimization Manager, highlighting strengths and areas for improvement. • Mentor drivers by offering guidance and support to build skills and confidence during role transition. • Serve as an ambassador for WM, promoting company values, safety standards, and ensuring high performance and compliance.

What You Bring

The Designated Driver Trainer (DDT) is a dual‑role position that combines regular route operation with driver‑training responsibilities. While operating a WM vehicle, the DDT supports new‑driver onboarding and provides ongoing development for existing drivers. The role emphasizes safety, mentorship, and compliance with company and regulatory standards. Candidates must hold a high school diploma or GED, have at least two years of experience operating a WM vehicle that requires a CDL, and possess a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with an air‑brake endorsement. Preferred qualifications include recent military driving experience and two years of experience supervising, training, or coaching personnel. These credentials ensure the DDT can effectively guide drivers and maintain safety standards. The position requires frequent standing, walking, lifting, pushing, pulling, crouching, reaching, and handling, as well as sitting, talking, and hearing tasks. Work occurs both inside garages or shops and outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, humidity, and inclement weather.
